booze infused rainbow fruit skewers - preparing for Capital Pride!

Booze Infused Rainbow Fruit Skewers

Capital Pride is coming up on Saturday, and we’re preparing by doing what we do best: getting drunk. Only now, with rainbows!

These fruit skewers are awesome because they’re versatile: skewer them, layer them in a bowl like fruit salad, blend them with ice, or use the pointy end to vanquish rainbow-phobic people, although I obviously can’t recommend that because then you wouldn’t be able to eat the fruit! Also, legal reasons.

The only unfortunate thing here is the name, but Sarah wouldn’t let me call it “gay fruit on a stick,” so here we are!

You can use any color, flavor, and fruit combinations you like with these, and you can also mix colors to make ones you might be otherwise missing. I highly suggest picking up cheap and low alcohol (about 15%) liqueurs for two reasons: (1) you have to have enough to cover the fruit, and I doubt you’d want to pour $200 worth of liqueur on a party gimmick, no matter how cute it is… and (2) we don’t want you to gag. Anything higher than about 17% and you’ll start to wonder why you’re not just drinking vodka instead.

On another note, some fruit will work better than others for this – the more porous, the better. In our experience, pineapples take up color the best, apples and melons work fairly well, especially for darker colors, and more solid fruits (like the lychees) will wind up with a tie-dye pattern or none at all.

Here’s what we used.

Fruit Ingredients:

  • 1 can of pineapple chunks, drained
  • 2 medium apples, skinned and cut into bite-sized chunks
  • 4 lemons, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1 can of lychees, drained and halved

Liqueurs:

  • Red: Sloe gin (Hiram Walker $8)
  • Orange: Orangecello (Caravella $16)
  • Green: Sour Apple Pucker (DeKuyper $7)
  • Blue: Hpnotiq or blue curacao (Hpnotiq $21, DeKuyper $7)
    • We used both – 2 parts Hptnotiq and 1 part blue curacao
  • Yellow: Créme de banana (DeKuyper $7)
  • Purple: Black raspberry liqueur (Mr. Boston $6)

How to Put This in Your Mouth:

  1. In covered containers, cover the fruits in liqueurs of your choice and leave in the fridge overnight.

We turned our pineapple chunks orange, blue, and purple; we turned the apples green in the sour pucker, and we soaked our lemons in the yellow créme de banana with a heaping pile of sugar to compensate for their sourness. We turned the lychees red and purple and wound up with an interesting tie-dyed pattern.

  2. …And that’s it! Remove from the liquid and skewer.
