Orange Blossom Grapefruit Lemonade

Sarah and I were going over potential recipes when I remembered that we haven’t posted a drink in quite some time.

Sarah, ever observant, replied, “We posted one two weeks ago.”

“Hmm… I don’t remember that.”

“That’s weird. You weren’t even drunk.”

“I wasn’t drunk?”

“Nope.”

“…Are you sure?”

“Yeah. Actually, you haven’t been drunk in,” she trailed off thoughtfully, “almost two weeks.”

My sense of self rapidly deteriorated. “That can’t be good. Something must be wrong with me.”

“That’s probably an exaggeration.”

“You don’t understand,” I stood up and began to pace. “Alcohol for me is like how sunlight is for trees, or how heat is for the Maillard reaction, or how Acacieae for giraffes, preferably from the genus commiphora or terminalia -”

“I see you’ve been reading Wikipedia again.”

“I don’t expect you to understand, what with your non-drinking ways and your health consciousness.”

“I get drunk with you all the time.”

A valid point, but I was too focused on the task at hand to acknowledge it. “What excuse shall we use to get drunk today?”

“Since when do you need an excuse?”

“It’s raining. Does that count?”

“It’s rained twelve out of the last fourteen days.”

“Or I suppose it was sunny this morning – maybe we can drink to that?”

“Do you even hear me anymore?”

“No, no, that won’t do – haven’t we accomplished anything recently?”

“…Well, you did graduate last week.”

“Oh yeah,” I stopped pacing. “I forgot.”

Orange Blossom Grapefruit Lemonade

Orange blossom grapefruit lemonade - orange blossom water, pamplemousse (grapefruit liqueur), vodka, and lemonade

This orange blossom grapefruit lemonade is refreshingly tart and floral scented without being overwhelmingly perfumed, perfect for the summer days that we haven’t had yet…! I do recommend that you smell and taste the orange blossom water beforehand to make sure you like it. People tend to be pretty opinionated about the flavor, so adjust accordingly depending on your tastes.

This recipe requires no added sweetener (the Pamplemousse is sweet enough), is party-sized, and makes about 9.5 cups.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of fresh-squeezed lemon juice (this took about 12 lemons for us)
  • 1 cup of fresh-squeezed ruby red grapefruit juice (about 2 large grapefruits)
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) of Pamplemousse Rose
  • 1 and 1/2 cups vodka
  • 1/4 cup orange blossom water – we used Cortas brand. If you can’t find it in your local grocery store, try a Persian or Middle Eastern market.
  • 3 cups of water

How to Put It in Your Mouth

  1. Mix all ingredients together in a large pitcher or dispenser and stir. Add ice and stir again.
  2. Garnish with a lemon twist or slice of lemon (optional).
