Salted Plum Wine Spritzer - choya plum wine, sloe gin, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt topped with club soda

Ah, finally, a salty-sweet thing that doesn’t involve bacon.

Behold the version of wine that’s for people that hate wine – those people like me that have to go through the shame of refusing somebody’s finest and then enduring their stares as you’re suddenly demoted to the children’s table.

If I do drink wine, I prefer it to taste like strawberry jam mixed with vodka, or a little-too-old grape juice. Nice, fancy dry wine tastes like licking the bottom of somebody’s feet. In other words, my favorite wines are meant for dessert or underage college students.

Now, this is where the plum wine comes in handy. It’s moderately priced and not as many people have tried it, so now I get to drink my fruity sugar wine and look sophisticated. It’s a win-win.

…And then I turned it into a soda.

Salted Plum Wine Spritzer

Salted Plum Wine Spritzer - choya plum wine, sloe gin, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt topped with club soda

For anyone who has never had a salted plum drink (or a salted soda), please, please, please try this salted plum wine spritzer. It might sound a little odd, but if you like salted caramel anything, or bacon and chocolate, or sausage and maple syrup, or any combination of salty and sweet, you’ll love this. The sweetness of the sloe gin and the plum wine is perfectly tempered by the salt and lemon, and the icy cold fizz makes it perfect for a hot day.

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz. plum wine (we highly recommend Choya)
  • 1/2 oz. sloe gin
  • 1/2 oz. lemon juice
  • 3 oz. club soda
  • 1/8 to 1/4 tsp. salt
    • I recommend starting with 1/8 and increasing the amount if it’s not salty enough for your tastes.
  • Ice

How to Put This in Your Mouth:

  1. Fill a tall glass with ice. Add the plum wine, lemon juice, sloe gin, and salt. Stir until salt is dissolved. Top with club soda and stir gently until mixed.
  2. Alternatively, if you’re concerned about presentation, you can build the drink but add the sloe gin last. It will end up staying separated (as in our pictures) until you agitate it.

Enjoy!

Alternatively, if you’re concerned about presentation, you can build the drink and add the club soda slowly so that the bottom is darker than the top, or you can build the drink and add the sloe gin last so that the top is darker than the bottom. It will end up staying separated (as in our pictures) until you agitate it.

Enjoy!
