We’re posting this pretty late. I’d like to make a joke about targeting this post at people who forgot until the last minute, but I can’t because every store in the US has been shoving cupid’s arrows into our eyeballs for over a month. (I’m pretty sure we’re only a step away from getting online advertisements reminding us when our anniversaries are.)
So, assuming that you’ve gotten your sweetie a gift or two already, now is the time to remind yourself that Valentine’s Day should be about a feeling, not about a price tag. A feeling that’s warm, that tingles pleasantly, that wraps around you like a gentle embrace; a feeling caused by tender emotions or love or alcohol.
They’re pretty similar. They both inspire feelings of excitement and giddiness, they both encourage new and strong attractions, and when they wear off, they both cause you to question how you’ve arrived at this place in your life.
Anyway, in the spirit of love and alcohol and other volatile mixtures, we offer you this:
The Honeyed Rose Cocktail
This cocktail is lightly sweet with a very elegant, decadent flavor – it tastes like a marble statue looks, if you know what I mean. And also it’s pink, just like love, apparently.
If you’ve ever tasted or worked with flower flavors before, you likely know that too much can quickly become overpoweringly perfume-like. While this cocktail is balanced, if you’re not a huge fan of rose or you find the smell too strong, I suggest cutting down the amount to a 1/2 ounce instead of 3/4.
- 1.5 oz. honey liqueur (we used Bärenjäger)
- 3/4 oz. rose water
- 3/4 oz. simple syrup
- 3/4 cup grapefruit juice – fresh-squeezed is better
- Dash of grenadine, for color
To make it, simply shake or stir with ice, the strain and serve. Garnish with a cherry, strawberry, your lipstick, or anything else that’s red.
